The Long Cycle Notes

Where can US importers source marble tableware outside Italy and China?

By Jeffrey Chen · Published 2026-10-06

Look at Taiwan — specifically Hualien, on the island's east coast. Hualien sits on one of Asia's richest marble reserves, its stone works once supplied major U.S. retailers, and the saws, lathes and craftsmen are still running. For importers building a China+1 program in marble boards, trays, mortars, cake stands and pedestals, it offers natural stone, hand finishing and short turnaround without starting an industry from zero.

Why buyers are asking this question now

Most marble tableware sold in North America traces back to a short list of places. Italy is the reference for premium stone. China has carried most of the volume. India and Turkey are the names that come up next. As importers rebuild their supply chains around China+1, the search usually goes to new countries.

The strongest option is not always a new one. Sometimes it is a proven one the market stopped looking at.

Hualien: Asia's "Marble Kingdom"

Hualien, on Taiwan's east coast, sits on marble reserves often compared with Italy's Carrara. There was a time when Hualien's marble industry supplied U.S. retailers from Macy's to Crate & Barrel. Then retail buying shifted, and the market forgot.

When I stood inside a marble works there this year, the saws were running. The craftsmen were still there — some with thirty years on this stone. The only thing missing was the orders.

That matters for a buyer, because three things that are hard to build from scratch are already in place:

  • The stone can't be replicated. Veining like this comes out of the ground, not out of a process.
  • The craft never left. Turned pedestals and hand-polished boards — no two alike.
  • The speed. Work that takes a month elsewhere ships out of Hualien in a week.

This is not a theory. In 2026, Taiwan marble won us a Walmart order — through one of the leading U.S. importers we work with.

How the other options compare

Every origin has a place. The useful question is which one fits the program.

  • Italy — the premium reference for stone and design, usually at a price point and lead time that suit specialty and luxury programs more than mass retail.
  • India — a large handicraft base in marble and stone, strong in hand-carved and inlaid decorative pieces.
  • Turkey — one of the world's major marble producers, with a strong stone-processing industry close to Europe.
  • Vietnam — has its own marble and stone sources and a growing export manufacturing base; a natural partner origin when the rest of the program (glass, ceramics) is already there.
  • Taiwan (Hualien) — natural stone, experienced craftsmen and fast turnaround, with a track record supplying U.S. retail, and capacity that is available today.

A simple test for "overlooked" origins

When we evaluate an origin, we look for three signals together:

  1. It once supplied first-tier retail at scale.
  2. It lost those orders because of something external — a shift in buying, a pandemic, a policy change — not because of quality or compliance problems.
  3. The equipment and the people are still working.

When all three are true, the capability is already there and only the orders are missing. That origin deserves a visit before an untested new one. The limit matters too: "forgotten" is not the same as "gone". If the craftsmen have left and the equipment is sold, restarting is a different project.

What to check before placing a marble program

  • Stone selection and consistency — agree on veining and color range with approved reference samples, since natural stone varies by block.
  • Finish and sealing — polish level, edge profile, and a food-safe sealer for anything that touches food.
  • Weight and packaging — marble is heavy; packaging and carton drop tests protect both the product and the freight budget.
  • Labeling — country of origin, care instructions and natural-variation wording on pack.

If you are looking at marble tableware or home décor for a coming season, we can arrange samples from Hualien. Start a conversation.

Frequently asked questions

What marble products can be made in Hualien, Taiwan?
Cheese and serving boards, trays, coasters, mortars and pestles, rolling pins, cake stands, turned pedestals, candle plates and decorative pieces. Turned and hand-polished items are where the local craft shows most.
Is marble serveware food-safe?
Marble is a natural, porous stone. Serveware is normally sealed with a food-safe sealer, and items that touch food should be tested to the destination market's food-contact requirements before shipment. Use and care labeling should tell consumers to avoid acidic foods sitting on the surface and to hand wash.
How fast can Hualien turn around a marble order?
Faster than most buyers expect. Work that takes a month elsewhere can ship out of Hualien in a week, because the stone, cutting, turning and finishing are all in the same area.
Has Taiwan marble been sold at U.S. mass retail recently?
Yes. In 2026, Taiwan marble from Hualien reached a major U.S. mass retailer through one of the leading U.S. importers Jason Craft works with.
